Combine Iceland’s traditional scenic routes with the uninhabited volcanic highlands on this small group adventure tour.
From the lurching icebergs of Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon in the south, embark on a journey in specially modified vehicles through a dramatic wilderness where the deep valleys and sculpted mountains were formed in Ice Age eruptions.
Maximum group size on this highland adventure is 24 people.
Arrive Reykjavík. Transfer to the hotel and check in for an overnight stay.
Visit Þingvellir National Park, the ancient site of the world's first outdoor parliament then travel to the geysir geothermal area to witness the famous Strokkur geyser as well as numerous other boiling mud pools and hot springs. Continue onwards to the spectacular Gullfoss, the 'Golden Falls', one of the most impressive waterfalls in Europe. Overnight in Hella area. (B,D*)

Visit the picturesque waterfalls of Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss, before reaching Dyrhólaey Nature Reserve**, a small headland where in the spring months puffins nest. Stop in Vik before crossing the Myrdalssandur volcanic ash outwash plains, then pass through Eldhraun, the largest mass of lava ever to flow on earth. Overnight in Kirkjubaejarklaustur area. (B,D*)

Drive towards the Vatnajökull ice cap, by far the largest in Europe. Circumnavigate the Öræfajökull volcano featuring Iceland's highest point, Hvannadalshnjukur. Visit Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon, where huge icebergs loom and lurch on the water, and embark on a zodiac boat tour. Continue on your way, pass by several outlet glaciers and, en route, enjoy magnificent views of Skaftafell National Park. Overnight in Kirkjubaejarklaustur area. (B,D*)

Travel to Landmannalaugar, a magnificent area surrounded by colourful rhyolite mountains. This pearl of the interior consists of deep valleys and sculptured, often mossy mountains, many formed in volcanic eruptions under ice-age icecaps, forging a powerfully colourful experience. Discover hidden parts of the Icelandic interior, exploring the vast and desolate wilderness of the Sprengisandur highland route. With no bridges over the rivers, several river crossings are made on this rough track. Overnight in Mývatn area . (B,L,D*)

Today reach the nature reserve of Lake Mývatn - a paradise for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers - displaying some of the most visually bizarre attractions in the region as the colourful boiling mud pits of Hverarond and the still-warm lava fields of Krafla volcano. Continue to thundering Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe, and discover the serene horseshoe-shaped canyon of Asbyrgi National park that according to myth, is the hoof print left by Sleipnir, the magical eight-legged horse of the Norse god Odin. In the afternoon, visit the pretty fishing village of Husavik before returning to your accommodation. Overnight in Mývatn area. (B,D*)

Today discover the Askja caldera - a sunken crater located in Vatnajökull National Park -, formed by a volcanic eruption during the last Ice Age. Visit Goðafoss waterfall before continuing to Akureyri, known as the Capital of the North. Free time in Akureyri to explore or relax at your leisure. Continue around Vatnsnes Peninsula, which contains the extraordinary rock formation of Hvitserkur, a 15 metre (49 feet) tall cliff jutting out straight from the sea. Journey through rolling farmlands and across Laxardalsheidi heath to the Viking Age house at Eiriksstadir, the original home of Erik the Red and birthplace of his son Leifur Eiriksson. A day in Snæfellsjökull National Park. Circle around the legendary Snæfellsjökull glacier, where, according to Jules Verne, lies the entrance to the centre of the Earth. Continue to the expansive black sea shore of Djúpalónssandur. Stop at the picturesque harbour village of Arnarstapi with its magnificent columnar basalt rock formations. Take a unique walk between the villages of Arnarstapi and Hellnar before driving back to Reykjavík. Overnight in Reykjavík. (B)
Transfer to the Blue Lagoon for the chance to enjoy a unique bathing experience. Afterward, transfer to the airport for the flight back to UK. (B)

We enjoyed a wonderful holiday explore the Wilderness of Iceland. Our driver have us a great introduction to a country he clearly loves and cares about.
